About Us

Rtist is a brand with unique apparel that showcase clever code and the artwork it creates.

I'm a Finnish PhD candidate in Economics, developing Transformer network algorithms for macroeconometric analysis. My favorite statistical programming language is R, originally developed by statisticians for scientific research and data analysis. I also use it for fun to create nerdy artwork.

What makes the Rtist-products unique is that they include both the figure and the underlying mathematical code. The aim is to have simple, compact and readable code, where mathematical functions and for-loops are used cleverly to make something pretty.

A shirt with real code is a great conversation starter at a party - figure out together which part of the code does what. Even better, download R for free, type in the code, and the same figure will emerge!

Organic

All fabrics used by Rtist are made of high quality GOTS-certified organic cotton. The cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified seeds. Instead, production relies on natural processes like crop rotation, composting, and beneficial insects to maintain healthy soils and protect biodiversity. Organic production is also typically safer for farmer, additional to requiring less water and emissions.

High Quality

The Stanley/Stella t-shirts are made from 100% combed ring-spun cotton. Combing removes shorter cotton fibers that can cause lint and uneven textures, leaving only the long, strong fibers. Ring spinning then twists and aligns these fibers into a fine, tight yarn. Compared to open-end spinning, ring spinning takes more time but produces cotton that is both stronger and softer.

The resulting shirts are thick and durable, with a very soft feel. The smooth surface of combed ring spun cotton also enables great direct-to-garment (DTG) printing results with vibrant colors.

Fair Trade

Stanley/Stella and Econscious monitor working conditions through selective partner factories, supply chain transparency and by internal and third party audits.

Code Formatting

Highlights: The code is structured with a minimalist coloring scheme. Functions and math operations are highlighted with magenta, numbers with purple, and comments after # or inside quotations "" with lavender.

Assignments: In R, '<-' has been traditionally used for assigning functions and variables and '=' for parameters. In modern R the choice between these two options has become a matter of taste, even though the operators do still have some differences ihow they are parsed. I chose to use '=' for all assignments for simplicity (fewer symbols needed) and for generality across most coding languages.

Loops: I used for-loops to increase the transparency and language agnosticism of the code. Another option would be to use more efficient vectorized matrix operations, but they tend to be less readable. Yet another way is to loop more compactly with functions from the apply-family in R. These functions hide procedural details, and can be more cryptic to someone not familiar with them. For-loops are very explicit and can be understood by anyone regardless of their native programming language. Looping is also a more general computational approach than vectorization, capable of dealing for example with time-evolving random processes.

Delivery

Rtist-products are currently only available in the European Union. Printing is done in one of the European fulfilment centers of Printful.

  • Printing by Prinful: printful.com/sustainability-responsibility.

Delivery to any EU-country typically takes 1-3 weeks. The delivery fees are

  • €4.5 for orders up to €39.99
  • €7 for orders €40 - €69.99
  • €8 for orders €70 - €99.99
  • €9 for orders €100 and up

Quality guarantee: If there’s ever an issue with the print or quality of your item, we’ll send you a free replacement or give you a refund.

I hope you enjoy my designs!
